How to Get to Lauterbrunnen by Train
A valley of 72 waterfalls beneath sheer rock walls — including the Staubbach Falls, tumbling almost 300 metres straight off the cliff. Lauterbrunnen is the heart of the Swiss Bernese Oberland, and the train ride in is half the magic.
What is the route via Interlaken?
The gateway is Interlaken Ost, reachable by fast, frequent SBB trains from Zürich, Bern, Basel and beyond (around 2 hours from Zürich). From Interlaken Ost, the Berner Oberland Bahn runs up to Lauterbrunnen in about 20 minutes.
How to make the connection?
- 1. Get to Interlaken Ost (the Bernese Oberland hub).
- 2. Change onto the Berner Oberland Bahn toward Lauterbrunnen (timed to connect).
- 3. Arrive at Lauterbrunnen station, in the middle of the valley.
How to buy train tickets?
- Best months: June–October, when the waterfalls are at full flow and the high trails are open.
- Sit on the right climbing up from Interlaken for the first valley views.
- Base yourself here — Lauterbrunnen is the launch point for Wengen, Mürren and the Jungfrau region.
