How to Get to Lake Bled by Train
An island church on an emerald lake, under a cliff-top castle, ringed by the Julian Alps. Lake Bled is one of Europe's most photographed places — and one of the easiest to reach by train, if you know which station to aim for.
What is the route from Ljubljana?
The gateway is Ljubljana, Slovenia's capital. From Ljubljana it's a short regional hop (roughly 40–55 minutes) to Lesce-Bled, with frequent departures through the day. From Lesce-Bled, a local bus or taxi brings you down to the lakeshore in a few minutes.
Coming from further afield — Vienna, Salzburg, Munich, Venice or Zagreb — you'll route through Ljubljana first, then take the regional connection.
How to make the connection?
- 1. Get to Ljubljana (the Slovenian rail hub).
- 2. Take a regional train to Lesce-Bled (fast main line) or, for the scenery, to Bled Jezero on the Bohinj line.
- 3. From Lesce-Bled, a short bus/taxi reaches the lake; Bled Jezero is already by the water.
How to buy train tickets?
- Best months: June–September for swimming and the rowboats to the island; spring and autumn are quieter.
- For the photo — the classic clifftop castle view — go early, before the day-trippers arrive.
- Combine it with the Bohinj Railway for one of Europe's most underrated mountain rides.
You've seen it. Now go. The gateway is Ljubljana — book your train there, then it's a short regional hop to the lake. Trainline covers every operator in one secure checkout.
