How to Get to Hallstatt by Train
A fairytale village on a glassy alpine lake, ringed by mountains. Hallstatt looks impossible to reach — but the train does it beautifully, and the last step is pure magic: a little ferry that meets you on the water.
What is the route from Salzburg?
The most common way in is from Salzburg. There's no single direct train the whole way — you change once, usually at Attnang-Puchheim, onto the scenic Salzkammergut line that runs along the lakes down to Hallstatt Bahnhof. The whole trip takes roughly 2½–3½ hours depending on the connection.
How to make the connection?
- 1. Board at Salzburg Hauptbahnhof toward Attnang-Puchheim.
- 2. Change at Attnang-Puchheim onto the Salzkammergut regional line toward Stainach-Irdning / Obertraun.
- 3. Get off at Hallstatt station (across the lake — don't worry, this is correct).
- 4. Walk down to the jetty and take the ferry across to the village. It's timed to the trains.
How to buy train tickets?
- Best months: May–September, when the ferry runs most frequently and the light on the lake is at its best.
- Check the last ferry if you're doing a day trip, so you don't get stranded on the wrong shore.
- Go early. Hallstatt gets busy midday — the first trains give you the village almost to yourself.
- Buy a combined train ticket and let the live search find your best connection.
You've seen it. Now go. The gateway is Salzburg — book your train there, then it's the scenic regional line and the lake ferry to the village. Trainline covers every operator in one secure checkout.
