How to Get to Hallstatt by Train

By WoW Train · Updated June 2026 · 3 min read

A fairytale village on a glassy alpine lake, ringed by mountains. Hallstatt looks impossible to reach — but the train does it beautifully, and the last step is pure magic: a little ferry that meets you on the water.

The secret no one tells you: Hallstatt's railway station sits on the opposite shore of the lake from the village. A small ferry (the Stefanie) is timed to meet almost every arriving train and glides you across to the old town in about 10 minutes. Arriving this way — over the water, the village rising ahead — is the best entrance in the Alps.

What is the route from Salzburg?

The most common way in is from Salzburg. There's no single direct train the whole way — you change once, usually at Attnang-Puchheim, onto the scenic Salzkammergut line that runs along the lakes down to Hallstatt Bahnhof. The whole trip takes roughly 2½–3½ hours depending on the connection.

How to buy train tickets?

You've seen it. Now go. The gateway is Salzburg — book your train there, then it's the scenic regional line and the lake ferry to the village. Trainline covers every operator in one secure checkout.
