Most visitors to Marseille never hear about it. The Côte Bleue line leaves Marseille Saint-Charles, climbs onto cliffside viaducts, and hugs the Mediterranean past hidden calanques all the way to Miramas — a scenic, budget-friendly alternative to the TGV that locals have known about for over a century.
What is the Côte Bleue line?
Opened in the 1910s, the Côte Bleue ("Blue Coast") railway was built to connect Marseille with the industrial towns west of the city, running along the coastline rather than inland. Engineers had to blast through cliffs and build a series of viaducts to keep the tracks level with the sea — the same viaducts that now make this one of the most photogenic regional train rides in France.
The route, stop by stop
After leaving Marseille and passing through the industrial port district of L'Estaque, the line breaks free onto the coast. The train crosses open-air viaducts above Niolon, a tiny fishing cove with no road access — the train is the only easy way in. It continues through Carry-le-Rouet and Sausset-les-Pins, two calanque villages with cafés a short walk from the platform, before turning inland to end at Miramas.
Why it beats the TGV for this trip
The TGV is built for speed between cities — Marseille to Miramas isn't a TGV route to begin with, and even the fastest way inland would skip the coast entirely. The Côte Bleue TER is slower by design: no reservation, no assigned seat, and a fraction of the price of any high-speed ticket. You're paying for the view, not the speed, and the view is the whole point.
How to ride it as a day trip
- Start early from Marseille Saint-Charles. Morning light on the viaducts is the best for photos.
- Get off at Niolon. Ten minutes from the platform there's a rocky swimming cove with almost no crowds.
- Or stop in Carry-le-Rouet for lunch by the port, then catch a later train onward or back.
- No reservation needed — just check the live TER schedule and hop on.
Plan the rest of your trip
The Côte Bleue is easy to combine with a longer stay in Provence — Marseille, Aix-en-Provence and the Calanques National Park are all close by. Once you're ready to move on, compare live departures and book your seat in one place.
